How to Sell an Auto Body Shop

Collision shops sell on more than profit, insurer relationships, equipment, and licensing all shape the price. Here is how a confidential sale works, and what your shop is worth.

What makes selling an auto body shop different

An auto body and collision shop is valued differently from a general repair shop because so much of its value sits in insurer relationships. Direct Repair Program (DRP) agreements with carriers drive steady volume, and a buyer wants to know whether those relationships transfer with the shop or leave with you.

Equipment is the other big factor. Frame machines, spray booths, and ADAS calibration capability are expensive and hard to replace, so their condition and remaining life move the price. Like any auto business, collision shops also carry environmental considerations, paint, solvents, and waste, that buyers and lenders will diligence.

What is an auto body shop worth?

Most buyers value an auto body shop on a multiple of Seller's Discretionary Earnings (SDE), your profit plus the owner's salary and the personal expenses run through the business.

Collision shops are typically valued at roughly 2 to 3.5 times SDE, with equipment condition, DRP volume, and location moving you within that band. Before we set a number, I rebuild your SDE with proper add-backs, your salary, personal expenses run through the business, and one-time costs, so your true earning power shows up in the price.

A broker's job is to rebuild your SDE with the right add-backs so your true earning power, not just the tax-return bottom line, sets the price. Get a free, confidential valuation →

Selling without your staff or competitors finding out

Selling an auto body shop works best when no one finds out until the right moment. Employees, competitors, customers, and suppliers learning early is the number-one fear owners have, and for good reason, it can cost you staff and revenue mid-sale. I market every business with a blind profile: a teaser that describes the opportunity, the numbers, and the area only in general terms, and never names your business. Every buyer is screened and signs a non-disclosure agreement before they learn which business is for sale. Your team keeps working, your customers keep coming, and your sale stays private until it closes.

Selling an auto body shop, answered

Not automatically. DRP agreements are between the carrier and the shop, and carriers typically re-evaluate at a change of ownership. A capable buyer with a good record can often retain or re-earn them, but because it is a risk, we address it directly in how we present and structure the deal.

Most sell in about six to twelve months from valuation to close, depending on how clean the financials are, the lease or real estate, and the DRP and equipment picture. Preparing early is the biggest lever on timeline.

Not until the right time. The shop is marketed with a blind profile that does not name it, and buyers sign an NDA before learning which shop is for sale, so your DRP relationships and your crew are protected during the process.
